About Monte Fitz Roy

Located near El Chalten Village in the Southern Patagonian ice field, the mountain of Monte Fitz Roy was first scaled in 1952 by French alpinists Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone. The mountain is on the border between Argentina and Chile.

Originally called ‘Chalten’ it’s altitude is 3,405 metres. The term ‘Chalten’ refers to ‘Smoking Mountain’ in Tehuelche dialect. The name is due to the Aeolic phenomenon which makes the peak of the mountain look like it is surrounded by clouds. This gives the place a smoking volcano effect and look.

Mt. Fitz Roy has well-carved paths for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. Choose your difficulty level based on your experience and fitness level. This is a great way to witness a dramatic landscape in the form of rock formations which take the form of jagged peaks.

You will be frequently treated to some amazing views of the snow-covered steep hills during your climb. Enjoy the stunning beauty of Argentina as you traverse through the Iguazu National Park.

No wonder that Monte Fitz Roy is one of the most favourite spots among the hiking and adventure enthusiasts. Visit for a once in a lifetime experience.
