The world’s leading administrative capital, La Paz is the third-most populous city in Bolivia. La Paz is a great cultural destination full of amazing people, resting on the Andes’ Altiplano plateau at more than 3,500m above sea level. One of South America's largest lakes and the world’s highest navigable body of water, Lake Titicaca is situated here. Mi Teleferico, a jaw-dropping subway in the sky, provides the cheapest aerial transport facility in the city. The city has colonial buildings, red-tile roofs, many skyscrapers, Nevado Illimani, and other snowcapped peaks which gives off a distinctive aesthetic. The city hosts some of the most important universities of the country. A certified Olympic stadium is also situated here. The Witches’ Market, situated at the center of the city, has herbs and other remedies used by the Aymara. The famous unique dried llama fetuses are the most prominent, which is said to bring good luck. 

Public Transport System

Mi Teleferico is the best public transport system, the highest cable car in the world connecting La Paz to the neighboring El Alto. Other than that, shared cars or minibuses called trufi can also be found in the city. In terms of cabs, Radio taxis are the best and a recommended. It is the safest option, though a tad expensive.Buses are the main mode of transportation. It runs almost everywhere in the city. The major international bus terminal is called Calle Uruguay - Plaza Antofagasta. Uber is now also available in the city.

Trufi(shared cars/minibuses) generally charge around Bs 3-3.50.
Taxi is a bit costly and is around Bs 6-8. A normal ride by taxi from downtown to a place within the city won't cost more than Bs 20. Make sure that the taxi has a yellow sticker on the windshield.

Don’t: 

  • It can be very easy to get lost in market places so try to travel with someone who is familiar with the area if you’re visiting for the first time.
  • Pickpockets are also to be expected in the city.
  • Those who have altitude sickness should not visit without advice from a certified doctor.
  • Avoid drinking tap water.
  • Most roads are unpaved and can be dangerous, so don’t explore outside the city without a four-wheel drive vehicle and a reliable driver.
  • Make sure to take a radio taxi or marked taxi. There are a lot of fake taxis that aim to steal from passengers.

La Paz has the best nightlife in the world and rated brilliantly by many renowned publications. In fact, National Geographic declared La Paz to be one of the top 3 cities in terms of party and nightlife. Cozy pubs, to pumping all-night dance parties, and low alcohol prices are only some of the reasons why La Paz is one of the most exciting cities in South America to party. Best time to visit

May, August, September, October.The weather is mostly consistent year-round in La Paz and is fairly cool throughout the year. It has a subtropical highland climate. Summer starts from June to September and winter lasts during the months of December through March. The best time of the year to visit is between May and October. January is the busiest month for tourism, followed by April and November. During these months, prices for hotels and flights will be the most expensive.

Moderate time to visit

April, June, JulyThese are the months with the lowest chance of significant precipitation. June to August are pretty busy months due to travelers taking their summer vacation. It is also the time of year when many Bolivian festivals take place. The best time to ski in La Paz is often around the first week of July.

Worst time to visit

November, December, January, February, March.These months make up the rainy season and create problems for travelers. Particularly from January onwards, as roads can be flooded, landslides are common. Fog and clouds can make driving or hiking in the mountains dangerous. Flights are also frequently disrupted by poor weather, making these months not great for tourists.
