Welcome to the city which is all about falling water. Intrigued? Don't be. Just head to the Pliva Waterfall which is Jajce’s unique waterfall situated right in the center of the town. The 20-meter high falls are the point where two rivers, the Pliva and the Vrbas meet. The water of the falls is clear and glitters brightly with greenish-blue color. The spectacular official viewing platform gives the experience and one gets to feel the water spray from the falls. Immerse and lose yourself in the old fortifications of the city walls, or the town castle or delve into the natural surroundings from the high mountains to the deep river valleys.
Pliva Waterfall is a single impressive Waterfall 50 m wide with a smaller bush covered and an island in the middle. The northern side of the falls is lower than the southern side. With a spectacular widescreen of water, the waterfalls hit some of the edges of the travertine plunging into the deep pool and, several meters away, into a high barrage of travertine of the blocks that meet the Vrbas River. Downstream is the area of the Pilva Lakes which is a rather peculiar arrangement that is in reality is a flock of about 20 huts which once served as watermills for the local farmers. These are no longer used for actual milling, the Pliva Lakes watermills however draw tourists down the river from the giant waterfall in town. That one is certainly impressive with its showy 65-foot drop. But the little shingled watermills feel like they might be home to some local trolls, with their dragons hitched up outback.
Pliva River is different during the spring floods, or after the heavy autumn rains, when they turn into a fierce torrent, but during the summers, they are almost entirely dry. The little windowless huts sit on top of skinny stilts right over the gushing water. The flow of the water here is spread out, by using a series of little mills instead of one big water wheel, so the diffuse water power could be aggregated. This is really futuristic thought. A look at the little huts take sone back in time and one feels transported into a storybook village dating back to the Austro-Hungarian times.
