About Stari Most

The historic Stari Most( Old Bridge) town of Mostar is a spanning deep valley of the Neretva River, with developments from the 15th and 16th centuries. Stari Most has been named after the popular Turkish houses and Old Bridge and connects the two parts of the city. this old area reflects a unique cultural ethos that speaks of history, memorabilia, and of course the gastronomic delights on offer.

The Old Bridge was recently renovated post the disturbances of 1990 when many structures at the old town were destroyed.  The contribution by the international scientific committee established by UNESCO has helped in the edifices of the Old Town restoration or rebuilding. The Old Bridge area has the influence of the pre-Ottoman, Mediterranean, Eastern Ottoman, and Western European architecture, being one of the outstanding remains of multicultural urban settlement. The reconstructed Old Bridge and Old City reflects ethnic and religious communities, reconciliation, international cooperation, and the coexistence of diverse cultures.

Diving from the Old Bridge into the river is one of the main attractions in Mostar. The excitement to watch professional divers leap from the famous bridge is extremely popular and attracts people from all over the world. Come September 8th and this will bring the Red Bull Cliff Diving Competition which will be held here for the 4th consecutive year. Close to the bridge are the cobbled streets filled with unique souvenir shops. These sell handicrafts, bullets, copperware, and hand-knitted pointy house slippers from wool, local art, and Bosnian rugs.

Walk and explore coffee, refreshing drinks, or taste the traditional Bosnian meals at the local cafés and restaurants. The popular restaurants of the old town are Konoba Taurus, National Restaurant Cevabdzinica Tima – Irma, Restoran Hindin Han, Sadrvan, and Restoran Lagero.
