Ilha Grande National Park is located at the border of two of Brazil's states; namely, 'Parana' and 'Mato Grosso do Sul'. The park is situated in the 'Parana River Basin' and comprises a large number of islands. The entire stretch of the national park covers a total of nine municipalities. There has been a lot of work regarding the preservation of flood plains located here, which were greatly affected by 'Itaipu Lake'. Ilha Grande National Park was established on September 30, 1997. The Brazilian Ministry of the Environment's administrative arm, the 'Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation', administers the park.
The region in which the park is located is the last damming area of the Parana River. Nature presents its beauty in multiple ways throughout Ilha Grande National Park. The landscape is dominated by lagoons, lakes, continental low-land,islands, and islets - about 180 of them. These include Tucano, Pavao, Capivara, Pacu, Peruzzi, Gaivotas, Volta Redonda, Isabel, Bandeirantes, Joel Island, Ilha Grande itself, and many more. Huge biodiversity is common on the islands. The lagoons offer a great, peaceful view. The largest lagoon stretches 3,000 meters in width and 5,000 meters in length and is called, 'Lagoa Xambre'. It is lined with limestones and plays an important role in protecting and conserving fish breeds. Kayaking and paddling of boats are allowed here, letting you go deeper into this natural wonder.
The 78,875 hectares (194,900 acres) of the park is home to a large number of species in the 'Parana River Biodiversity Corridor'. There is a bird shelter called, 'Paredao das Araras' which gives you a chance to observe different species of birds. The amazing sites here offer you a chance to experience recreational activities, which range from luxury boating to taking a swim in the river banks. It is a great place to relax and let nature bring your heart and mind at peace.
