Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, or Iguaçu National Park is best known for the world’s largest waterfalls within its borders. But it is more than just the massive waterfalls or the river running through it. The park covers just shy of 458,000 acres of area, of which 300 kilometres (190 miles) are bordered by water.
Only about .3% of the total area of the park is open to visitors. That’s where you’ll find access to the waterfalls, the Visitors’ Centre, the Dumont Statue, and concessions. Be sure to see the Macuco Waterfall, the Black Well or Poço Preto. The rest of the park is home to rare and endangered wildlife like the giant otter and anteater.
The park’s geomorphic attributes and attractions were all created by volcanic eruptions dating back hundreds of millions of years. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and is a centre for biodiversity conservation.
