About Maracana stadium

Estadio do Maracanã is a world-famous stadium located in Rio De Janerio, one of the most popular cities in Brazil. Now owned by the state government of Rio, this stadium was inaugurated in the year 1950 and hosted the 4th FIFA world cup in Brazil. The Maracanã stadium was known initially as “Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho” after Mário Filho, a sports journalist in Pernambucan who was believed to bring up the initiative of establishing this colossal stadium. But the present name, Maracanã, is derived from a well-known river in Rio De Janerio, “the Maracanã river”.

The stadium was brought to construction right after Brazil won the hosting honor for the FIFA world cup. Estadio do Maracanã was a tennis stadium prior to being reconstructed into the largest stadium of Brazil. The foundation of this stadium was laid down in August 1948 precisely two years before the FIFA world cup game was scheduled. Despite organizing the sports event in 1950, the stadium got entirely constructed 15 years later in 1965.

The Maracanã stadium holds a capacity to host almost 78,838 attendees at a time. Apart from FIFA, it has also hosted world cup (2014), Confederations Cup (2013), Copa America (1989 and 2019), Summer Olympics, and Paralympics (2016). Estadio do Maracanã is a home ground to Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, and Vasco da Gama football club. The stadium also has a football museum that exhibits the history of football for Brazil through attractive and informative displays, like boots, T-shirts, and even footprints of famous players.
