Apopo is an NGO, training the rats to detect the landmines, to avoid tuberculosis and to save many lives. It offers a tour and demonstrates how the rats are trained for heroic work. It takes about 9 months to train a rat. The socializing of these rats starts when they are 4 weeks old. These trained rats have helped in saving many lives by detecting explosives. They can sniff the explosives and their light body weight prevents an accidental explosion. A visit to the place helps in the noble cause as the fee goes in the maintenance of the center.
