About National Gallery of Canada

Spread over an area of 46,621 square meters, the National Gallery of Canada is the largest art museum in North America in terms of its exhibition space. Designed by Moshe Safdie, the beauty of the architecture lies in its granite and glass building. The gallery provides a notable view of the Canadian Parliament building located on Parliament hill. The gallery boasts a collection of 93,000 works on Canadian, American, Asian, and European indigenous artworks. The uniqueness of this gallery lies in the various traveling exhibitions hosted by this gallery. In concomitance with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the gallery was first established in 1880 by John Campbell, the then governor-general of Canada. The western, eastern, and northern exterior façade of the gallery building adorns glass windows and pink granite walls. In contrast, the southern façade has a similar structure to that of a cathedral.

The main highlight of the National Gallery of Canada is the sculpture of a giant spider displayed outside the museum. The collection of the gallery even includes works dating back to the 18th century. Abstract paintings, contemporary paintings, postwar art, etc., are some of the main attractions of the gallery. The works of First Nation and Metis artists of the 20th century are some of the first entrants of this gallery. The gallery also features a library and archives that hold a massive collection of Canadian documents. Moreover, visitors can also check for some exquisite gift items for their loved ones from the gifts shops inside the museum.
