About Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall also called the Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family and Chen Clan Academy in Guangzhou was an academic temple. It was built for preparation of imperial examinations, by the juniors of 72 Chen clans, in 1984. Later it became an Industry college and still later on it was a middle school. Now it is a folk art museum that showcases the most characteristic Guangdong architecture, constructed in the traditional Chinese symmetrical style with beautiful wooden carvings. Be sure not to miss this place, as The Chen Clan Academy is the biggest, best-preserved and most attractively decorated conventional building in Guangdong Province and is much-admired as a dazzling gem among the artistic building in the south of the Five Ridges.

 

Must See

Fantastic decorations and carvings: from beams to ridges and from walls to columns. Inside the temple, there are intricate and delicate carvings of brick, wood, stone, pottery, plaster, and iron.

To reach Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, tourists can take subway line one to Chen Clan Academy Station.

Tips

  • Try to avoid visiting Chen Clan Academy during Golden Week and summer holidays where the crowds and number of visitors will be substantially higher than usual.
  • Don't forget to keep your passport or ID card.
  • You may not be able to sit as not many seats are available, so be ready to walk.
  • You may miss out few things as not everything here has an English translation.
