About Lovrijenac

Lovrijenac is built upon a 37-meter high rock which overlooks the sea. This fortress was built at the beginning of the 11th century because the Venetians allegedly intended to build their own great fortress at the same location. In order to hold Dubrovnik powerless against them, the people of Dubrovnik immediately decided to build a fortress on this virtually inaccessible cliff to protect the city from the Venetians. It has become one of the most beautiful stages of the world for one of the world's best plays, Shakespeare's Hamlet. While you walk along at the top of the walls it gives you a view of the city surrounded by the sea. Fort Lovrijenac was also used as the Red Keep at King’s Landing in the popular Game of Thrones television series. The scene where Tyrion, Podrick, and Bronn walk on the walls after the battle of Blackwater is filmed here. (Season 3 Episode 1 Valar Dohaeris). Revelin Fortress, the Fortress Saint-John, and Fort Bokar are some of the must-see points at this attraction.

Must See

Well while you are at the Lovrijenac and you have enough time with you for the day there are a few places around that you can visit within 4 to 5 km:

  • Adventure Dalmatia
  • Dubrovnik Shore Tours
  • Love Stories Museum
  • Brsalje Street
  • Cruises With Karaka
  • Amerling Fontana
  • Pile Gate
  • Dubrovnik West Harbour

How to reach

To reach Lovrijenac – from Pile proceed down the steps (follow the sign) to Kolorina Bay and follow a narrow and steep path to the entrance of the Tower. Pile is quite a famous bus stop. There are three areas at Pile to wait for a bus – one on the south side of the square and the other two on the north. The southside bus stop area serves buses 1, 1a, 1b, 1c, 2, 2a, 3, and 9.

Or you can use Uber.

Tips

  • It's advisable that you arrive early or in the early evening when the cruise liners' visitors have returned to the ships.
  • The early evening will give you romantic sunsets. It's also much cooler and more pleasant than visiting during the day.
  • This involves about 2 km of walking, which can be strenuous during the summer months when the sun is strong.
  • Please ensure you bring comfortable clothing that will shield you from the sun and comfortable shoes too.
  • Make sure you have sunscreen and your hats with you.
