About Castillo de los Tres Santos Reyes Magnos del Morro

Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro is a famous castle located at the entrance of the beautiful city of Havana. Erected in 1589 and finished in 1630, El Morro Castle is named after the three biblical Magi. It is famous as the guarding fortress of the city. ‘Morro’ is a Spanish word which means rock visible from the sea. In the colonial era, this Spanish castle served as a navigational landmark for the sailor. It is Havana's richest landmark that represents the golden history of the city. Canons of the fort are rusted yet preserved for visitors and this is a major attraction of the fort. The small underwater archeology exhibition is worth visiting when you are here. Wait to enjoy cannon fire at 9:00 p.m.

Designed by the Italian engineer Battista Antonelli, this castle is known to guard the city against pirates and colonists’ attacks. This wave-lashed castle is famous for its lighthouse which was constructed in the year 1844. The gigantic campus of the fort is famous for its 3-meter thick wall and deep protective moat which represents renaissance military architecture. When you are at the fort, surely look for the hole at the back wall. This is the hole from where prisoners were offered to the sharks to feed on. The campus houses several museums as well for the visitors. The fort exhibits a stable, chapel, dungeons, and a wine cellar. Castillo De Los Tres Reyes Del Morro is a famous attraction of the city which is worth visiting.

How to reach

By Air: The nearest airport to Havana is the Jose Marti International Airport. This is located 9 miles southwest to Havana.

You can hire a taxi from here which will drop you to the city in 20 to 30 minutes. It charges CUC$20. You can also take a bus from terminal 1.

By bus: To reach this castle you need to reach its nearest train station which is La Punta. From here take a walk of 9 minutes to reach the castle. The distance is about 653 meters.
