About Bellamar Caves

Bellamar Caves have been Cuba’s top attractions for more than one century now. The caves are close to Cuba’s resort towns, and you can access them from Matanza’s port city or Varadero, Havana. Being the oldest tourist attraction in Cuba, Bellamar Caves has been open to visitors since the 1860s. Apart from that, they are also among the deepest and longest natural caves in the country. The 2500m caves were discovered by a Chinese workman who was employed by Don Manuel Santos Parga.

The entrance to these caves is via a small museum where you can find restaurants, a playground, and a souvenirs shop outside. On entering the caves, you will first descend 163 steps down, and the remaining part of the tour will be on a flat and well-lit path via galleried and halls. The beautiful halls and galleries feature a massive 12m  stalagmite, Krstic crystals, fountains, underground streams, and other limestone formations. Indigenous fossils and paintings, also available in the same room. It is vital to note the area bears 28 rooms and is 3kms long. However, the area open to visitors is approximately 1 km long.

The caves are warm and humid; light clothing and good walking shoes are recommendable. Moreover, they are well-maintained, and the paths are well illuminated, making it easy for kids to imbibe the impressive geology. You can come in a taxi to Bellamar Caves or take advantage of an organized trip from Varadero. An arranged tour is advisable to ascertain an English speaking tour guide.
