About Saona Island and Altos de Chavon

Saona Island (Isla Saona) is the Dominican Republic's largest coastal island. Part of the National Park of the East, this island features plenty of white sandy beaches, tall palm trees, and soothing turquoise waters. It houses the remarkable Altos de Chavon, a recreation of a 16th-century Mediterranean village perched above the Chavon River. How to reach

Saona Island is only reachable by boat. The closest mainland town is Bayahibe and it is 40 minutes away by speedboat, or two hours away on a leisurely catamaran cruise.

Tips

  • There are no shops on the island, so be sure to take everything you need.
  • Sunscreen, a swimsuit, and a sunhat are essentials.
  • Most of the beach bars and kiosks do not accept cards. Bring adequate cash.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on the island.
  • Many passenger ferries and private boats are wheelchair accessible, but it's best to check with the operator in advance in case you need to use one.
  • The island is a  nature reserve and you can come across wildlife all over the island. bring your cameras along for some great photo ops.
