This place is of a great importance for locals as it is the site where the Ethiopian Christianity followers celebrate Meskel (the foundation of the True Cross of Jesus Christ) every year on September 27th or 28th. Every morning you can see the place full of athletes training which is a very unique experience. This is a historic place where the annual Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church religious festivity known as Meskel takes place since the time of Emperor Haile Selassie reign. On special events you can see different ways of communicating with locals which is nice to view. It is a memorial place to visit with lot of activity in the Square all related to human traffic and vehicles parked at the place. Meskel Square, used to be known as Revolutionary Square in Addis Ababa's central plaza where public speeches and demonstrations take place. Earlier the celebration Meskel Bonfire (a large open-air fire as part of a celebration) in Addis Ababa is lit up by the Emperor of Ethiopia along with the members of the Imperial family, the Nobility and high officials of the Orthodox Church and the Government.
