About Simien Mountains National Park

One of the finest places to see in Ethiopia is the Simien Mountains! Inscribed as the world’s first natural heritage site, this place offers great panoramic views of the flora and fauna as well as some of the endemic species of bird.  You will the most amazing species of birds and wildlife here. Located in the North Gonder zone of Amhara National regional state, it is home to remarkable birds like the Red-billed Chough and a variety of raptors and vultures. The plateaus will offer you an amazing trekking experience, unfolding downwards in the lovely plains. The main attraction of the Simien Mountains National Park is its biosphere: the steep cliffs and the cool climate at the altitude of the Erica tree line is home to the ibex species (Capra ibex wee) endemic to the Simien Mountains.

 The human population living in the area adds to the speciality of this special natural environment. The traditional style of the people living in the place surviving with the harsh condition and limited resources gives great insight to the visitors. During your stay you can interact with the local people here, they are very approachable and can know about their culture and type of life they lead in that weather conditions. 

You can come to watch the magnificent birds and sit among the monkeys or stay for a week to camp and trek, as then you will get to know Ethiopia’s heritage. One time entry will grant you access for the full day, make sure you utilise it well! A guide can be hired or you can even explore on your own the wildlife, the trekking trail and the lovely views of the place. While a guide will be a better investment but exploring yourself will be equally well to know this exotic place. Pack your bags and head over to this wonderful destination.

How to reach

You can reach from Gondar to the National Park by the public bus, hired car or by taxi. It will be a 2-hour drive from Gondar.

Tips

  • It will be better to hire a guide to cover the whole place

  • There is a huge change in temperature during day time and night time, so carry your clothes likewise

  • There is a decent accommodation option at the park itself but make sure to book in advance

  • Explore the nearby areas as they are equally wonderful and will give you the feel of the rustic Ethiopean vibe of the place

  • Do visit the market place near the park, to give you an insight into the life of the locals
