About Uspensky Cathedral

Astute and majestic, Uspenski Cathedral was built between the years 1862 and 1868 after the death of the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev who designed the architecture of the cathedral. The church is situated on the hillside of the Katajanokka peninsula. The church is also the seat of the Archdiocese of Helsinki. It also happens to be the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe. The cathedral has been preserving various iconic valuables, however, St. Nicolas - The wonder maker, was stolen in 2007.
