About Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

Visited by more than 11 million tourists every year, the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre is the second most-visited church in France after Notre-Dame offering a sweeping view of Paris. It is also a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is considered as a famous landmark in Paris. It has a deep and complex history because it is not only a religious monument but also a political one.

The Basilica is best known for its unique bells. They are the fifth largest bells in Europe, measuring a whopping 9 feet in diameter and weighing 43,307 lbs. When it rings on special occasions it can be heard almost 6 miles away. The Mosaic of Christ in Glory in the apse at the Basilica is one of the largest mosaics of its kind in the world, created on two levels. The Grand Organ is still played regularly. It boasts four keyboards, 109 ranks, 78 speaking stops, and a 32-note pedalboard. It is considered to be one of the finest not only in France but all of Europe. Plan to attend a Night of Adoration, or go to Mass during the week.

Even if you are visiting Paris for a day do not miss it, especially when you are visiting the Basilica for the first time. You can sit and gaze at the ceiling and the beautiful interiors for hours. The crowd’s self-policed behavior here will give an entirely different spiritual experience when compared to other religious sites.
