About Berlin Wall

A concrete barrier that had 302 guard towers and 55,000 landmines and divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989 is now one of the famous tourist spots in Berlin. People could cross the East-West border easily for any purpose, be it for work, shop, theatre, movies etc., before the Berlin Wall was built. After the wall came up, people used to pay with death for moving from East to West Berlin by jumping the wall. They could cross through one of three checkpoints. Finally there were 12 checkpoints along the wall. On November 9, 1989 East and West Berliners flocked to the wall, drinking beer and champagne and chanting “Tor auf!” (“Open the gate!”). At midnight, they flooded through the checkpoints. That was the beginning of the fall of the wall.
