About Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary was established with the goal to protect the habitat of the Black Howler Monkeys. The sanctuary has been home to the endangered Black Howler Monkey and other species for many years. The black howler monkey or the baboon is the main concern animal here with the idea of preserving and providing a healthy breeding and growing grounds. It offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the lush green rain forest and watch the Black Howler Monkeys in their natural habitat. There are wonderful nature hikes, night tours through the rain forest and river tours that you can opt for. The trip is both adventurous and educational and you will thoroughly enjoy this unforgettable experience.

How to reach

It is a 40 minutes drive from Belize city and can be reached by taxi. You can also rent a car and drive yourself to the location.

  • Carry a water bottle with you as the humidity is very high.
  • Long trousers are recommended to protect your skin from insects.
  • This location is not wheelchair accessible and requires a 10 minutes hike through the rainforest.
  • Use bug spray and a hat to keep safe from insects and the hot sun.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and water resistant shoes
  • The baboon sanctuary has adopted methods that have shown a remarkable rise in the healthy primates population.
