About Xunantunich

Overlooking the charming Mopan River from a stunning hilltop, the ruins at Xunantunich are some of the most visited archaeological sites in the world. It is located in the Cayo region and dates back to the Classic Era, about 200-900 AD. Xunantunich is made up of 6 sections and has about 25 different temples and structures, predominantly, the very astonishing El Castillo, which stands 40 meters tall. From its top, you can see an amazing view of the jungle canopy, the other ruins, and even beyond the Guatemalan border. Learn about the incredible history of the Mayan inhabitants, and explore the displays at the visitors' center.

How to reach

The easiest way to get there is by bus going toward Benque Viejo del Carmen. After you get down, take a free ride on the hand-cranked ferry to cross the Mopan River, with a quick 1.5 Kms walk to the site. If you're coming from San Ignacio, you can usually find a direct bus going to the ruins as well. 

Tips

  • Carry a sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses as it can be very sunny.
  • Summers are very hot, so carry a water bottle with you always.
  • Learn about the incredible history of the Mayan inhabitants at the Visitor's center.
  • Entry is free during Sundays.
  • Plan to reach the site early during the day as the place will be less crowded and the weather will be pleasant.
