About Santhome Church

San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in Santhome,  Chennai, India. It is constructed over the grave of reverend Saint Thomas in 16th Century by the Portuguese. It was Opened in 1523 with the dimensions of 47m in height and 12m in width. It is constructed in the Architectural styles of Gothic architecture and Gothic Revival architecture. The Church is acclaimed to be one of the only three churches built over the tomb of an Apostle of Jesus. Decorated with a completely pristine white facade the colored panes and window seat adds a persistent character to the structure of the basilica. The museum inside the vicinity houses various antiquities at the display, wall paintings, an episcopal chair, a stone receptacle are some of the mysterious findings exhibited in the basilica. Close to the ocean, the sea waters create an intimidating Aura around the church.
