About Phoenix Park and Dublin zoo

This is the biggest enclosed urban park in Europe, spanning some 1,750 acres. There's a Visitors Centre located close to a 17th-century tower house, and Ash town Castle for those wishing to find out more about the park and its environs. Covering over 28 hectares of Phoenix Park, it is divided into areas named Asian forests, orangutan forest, the Kaziranga trail, friends of the Arctic, sea lion cave, African plains, Roberts’s house, and South American house. Across generations of locals and foreigners, the main draw is Dublin Zoo, which attracts more than one million visitors annually, dates back to 1830, and is the second oldest zoo in Europe. Amongst the exotic animals, there are Asian lions, Asian elephants, a Reptile House, an orangutan enclosure, sea lions, tigers, hippos, bats, and penguins. Amenities include restaurants, kids play areas, and a family farm.

How to reach

From Dublin city, you need to take a Taxi. It's 4.5 Km away and takes 20 minutes to reach via N circular Road 101; if you go there by walking you need 43 min via R101. By bus you need to take Bus no 25, 26, 66, 66a and 67 it will reach there in 15 min and it’s available in every 8 min from Dublin city, Cathal Brugha Street.

The bus in Dublin costs €1.55 by Leap Card and €2.15 by Cash from stages 1-3. By Luas, a single journey starts at €1.54, if using a leap card. If paid through cash, it will start at €2.10.

Tips

  • Bring the kids to collect chestnut in September
  • The park is clean and full of joggers, cyclists, and walkers, so you can also join them
  • Enjoy tea in the Tea Rooms, Polo at the Polo grounds, Cricket, African Plains, chestnut picking in Autumn, feeding the ducks, seeing the Wellington Monument, the Papal Cross, the deer who roam free.
  • Be sure to walk around to see all the statues and memorials, but watch out for the kamikaze seagulls, there could be some encounters.
  • The park will provide an abundance of solitude and tranquillity.
  • It's safe to walk around in solitude and you can just walk, play,  host a picnic or whatever you wish.
  • You can see the US Ambassador’s residence, the Irish President’s home, the Ordnance Survey office and the HQ of the Garda Siochana (Irish Police)
  • Hire bikes from Phoenix Park Bike rental and use them to get around the city as well as Phoenix Park
  • From the Collins Barracks, Dublin Zoo in Phoenix Park is about 20 minutes on foot
