About Meiji JIngu Shrine

A panoramic view of the regality of Japan's history at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, Japan which is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken leaves one in awe! Emperor Meiji brought about a wide-spread change in Japanese society and politics by opening up of trade and policies with other nations of the western world. The Meiji era is marked by the confluence of Western-meets-Eastern and rapid industrialization and growth. The shrine itself is a traditional Shinto shrine built in 1920. It was once destroyed in the World War II but was rebuilt after raising funds and completed in 1958. The garden grounds are spread over 700,000 square meters and have trees received as donations from all over the country. The New Year's Eve which is looked forward to every year sees thousands of people to gather, pray and receive blessings at the shrine.

  • The beautiful Meiji Shrine is located in a forest that covers an area of 70 hectares (170 acres). This area is covered by an evergreen forest that consists of 120,000 trees of 365 different species, which were donated by people from all parts of Japan when the shrine was established.
  • The inner shrine complex called Naein includes a treasure museum that houses articles of the Emperor and Empress. The treasure museum is built in the Azekurazukuri style.
  • The outer part called Gaein consists of Tokyo Olympic Stadium, Meiji memorial hall, and Shinto wedding halls

How to reach

  • Reach Harajuku or Yoyogi station
  • Take a 5-minute walk to the shrine from the above station

Tips

  • Wear comfortable clothes and clothes appropriate for a shrine visit. Do not wear revealing or very fancy clothes to the shrine
  • The temple opens at dawn and closes at sunset so manage your visit timing accordingly
  • Maintain the silence and integrity of the place
