About Si Phan Don Mekong River

'Si Phan Don' is a group of river islands situated on the, world's twelfth longest river, 'Mekong River'. The Mekong River flows through, and transversely crosses, the 'Lao People's Democratic Republic', having its group of Islands located in the 'Champasak Province'. The Mekong River is home to 'four thousand islands' which is what 'Si Phan Don' translates to. The Si Phan Don has been able to attract tourists to three of its many islands namely: 'Don Khong', 'Don Det', and 'Don Khon'.
The Mekong River as well as the four thousand islands are what the local economy depends on. The people living in this area are usually farmers or fishermen. However, seeing the growth in potential of becoming a popular tourist destination, a lot of locals have started facilities and services to aid the tourists' experiences.

The Si Phan Don Islands seek explorers and adventurous people. You can rent a bicycle and travel within the islands, discovering more and more as you cycle across the local settlements. Trekking acts as an important feature of your visit to Si Phan Don. The mountainous terrain and the somewhat rugged land scape at some parts of the islands requires long treks. However, the end results after the long treks are worth it.
You can have a look at many waterfalls. Maybe even sit on the tributary bed after one of them and relax as the fresh, cold water caresses your body and relieves you of the tiredness you might feel after the long treks. You are even allowed to hire boats or rafts that lead you away from the island coasts. You may even want to take a swim in the River, or go to the area where you could maybe spot a few of the twenty 'Irawaddy Dolphins' left.
