About Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is situated in northern Laos. It is a small town which is surrounded by mountains and is around 700 metres above sea level. With the French architectural designs,  glistening temples, and touch of nature it's really hard to forget the warmth of this place. This picturesque town has an entire historical section dedicated to tourism, ranging from former royal palaces to Wats (temples), waterfalls, scenic peaks and the milky-brown waters of the Mekong River. You can even climb/sail your way through Luang Prabang. It’s also very well known for its Buddhist temples, including the gilded Wat Xieng Thong, dating back to the 16th century, and Wat Mai, once the residence of the head of Laotian Buddhism.

If you are interested in picking up traditional handicrafts, Laos is an ideal destination for you. People here are specialized in Hill tribe silks, arts, crafts, jewelry.

  • Try buying the beautiful Phaa sin: a wraparound skirt worn with a silver belt is the traditional dress of Lao women.
  • Carvings: From simple to aesthetic and highly spiritual, carvings in Laos are the wide variety of impressive pieces made of wood, bone, and stone. Lao craftsmen can carve all things in their daily life or their belief.
  • Jewelry: The majority of jewelry shops are to be found along Samsenthai Street and trade primarily in silver and gold. The crafting of gold and silver jewelry is another skill that several hill tribes in Laos excel.
  • Coffee: Your Laos tour package is incomplete without taking coffee back as a souvenir. Laos is known as the best place in Southeast Asia to grow coffee. Laos Coffee is locally also known as Paksong since it is usually cultivated around the town of Paksong on the Boloven Plateau.
  • Weaving silk: Silk is woven by the traditional methods in small workshops or homes throughout the country. The art of weaving is still much more than a home industry, which makes the smallest communities own the finest silk and cotton weavers in the world
