About Riga Town Hall Square

Earlier, the Town Hall Square was a market square and till the 19th Century, it was the economic and administrative center of Riga. The square was the social and cultural hubbub of the city and hosted processions, tournaments, and dances regularly. Executions too were a part of the entertainment during earlier times.

One of the major structures of the Town Hall Square is the Town hall - a three-storied building with a tower and a clock. The House of Blackheads is another major attraction of the Square. The earliest mention of this building can be found in sources dating back to 1334. It is mentioned as the new house of the Big Guild. This impressive square is worth a visit both during daylight or night time. The historic buildings have amazing architecture. There are always small groups of musicians and dancers performing around the square to entertain locals and tourists alike. There are outdoor terrace eateries where one can eat from spring till late fall.
