About Beirut

The capital and the largest city of Lebanon, Beirut is an exotic blend of marvelous architecture and chequered history with layers of Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab crusader and Ottoman remains. Touted as 'Party capital of the Arab', the city showcases a modern and cosmopolitan culture with religiously diverse people. Conflicting religious structures lay beside each other along with streets and hotels that are a feast for gastronomists. The chic nightlife of Beirut speaks of the resolute spirit of the Beirutian celebrating life in spite of war and terror. Visit Beirut not just for the party spirit but for having an overall experience of serenity and tranquillity amidst the chaos.

Public Transport System

Public Transport is the cheapest and most extensive way to travel through the city of Beirut. There are three main modes of public transport in Beirut. Public buses are most economical way to move around the city and country. The common operating buses in the city are Lebanese Commuting Company (LCC) and OCFTC. There are also mini buses and mini vans. Apart from buses, there are also shared taxis, yellow taxis, rental cars and Uber available in the city. They aren't very convenient either and definitely more costly. In some cases taxis are not metered so tourists have to negotiate the price in advance before hopping a ride.

Cleanliness and Efficiency

On weekends, the buses and taxis are generally less frequent compared to week days. Buses are crowded and their frequency is difficult to predict. These buses carry placard in Arabic mentioning route details. Though people understand French and English to some extent to travelling on public buses can be managed for an economical ride. On an average the transportation system look clean and the drivers are also tidy. Traffic is heavy in the city, the roads are improved and expanded.

Apart from visiting the tourist spots and sightseeing, one should do the following list of things while traveling the city:

  • Visit the historic monuments and tourist sites, some of which are Rouche rock and Downtown Beirut.
  • Mar Mikhael, Humra and Gemmayzeh are must-visit places for their graffiti, galleries, clothing shop and a gamut of bars and clubs.
  • Night time is the best and safe time to travel as there is no official closing time for bars or clubs, and people seem fine staying out late even on weeknights.
  • The city is home to a huge number of wine stores that offer liquor and wines at very attractive prices, so it is a must try for wine lovers.
  • Food is incredible, so one must try the local food shop, authentic Lebanese breakfast and typical Lebanese dishes like hummus, fattoush, za’atar salad, and falafel.
  • Used the Teleferik to set a harisa that would cost less money.
  • One needs to bargain a lot at every place whether it is in a local market or with the taxi service.
  • The best way to enjoy and explore the city is with a local tour guide.
  • Officially announced that tap water is safe to consume but most people still prefer bottles.
  • Need to wear comfortable shoes as most of the places need to be walked to.
  • Winter is wet so its better to carry an umbrella.

In every place there are the positive and negative sides, here is the list of things to avoid :

  • Drivers do not respect pedestrians much due to humongous traffic, so one should not walk on a busy road without checking both sides.
  • Do not travel to refugee settlements due to potential armed conflicts.
  • Be aware of the taxi scams, as they take advantage of outsiders, so better to have knowledge about the right fares for different places.
  • Though French and English are widely spoken but still in conservative areas, the language may become a problem as Arabic is the only spoken language.
  • Driving here is a bit difficult, as drivers mostly drive rashly so better to use public transport or hire a driver.
  • Though exploring the city is pocket-friendly but still one should have travel insurance/medical insurance with them.
  • Buses are mostly crowded so there is a risk of pickpocketers.
  • Don't hesitate to ask locals as they treat visitors with great curiosity and are always glad to help.
  • Before clicking pictures of a particular place or people, at first, one should check whether it is permissible or not, as in some religious sites taking photos and videos are prohibited.

Night Life

During the night time, the energy is magnificent. Generally, for tourists, the first thing that will pop up are clubs, pubs, bars, and restaurants. Skybar, an open-air nightclub, is the best place for hanging around during the night, it has a beautiful balcony through which one can see the sea. Another best-known nightclub is O1ne Beirut, it offers a great ambiance, trendy music, and good food. Al Mandaloun, another well known night club, is also a must-go-to for its entertainment program, music and everything else. In terms of music, Beirut has good clubs such as The Gärten, AHM and The Grand Factory. Clubs are the safest place for the LGBTQ community. For smokers and tobacco intakers, Beirut's shisha bars are an ideal place to visit, though smoking is technically illegal indoors in Beirut. During summers, tourists mostly enjoy the cool breeze over the sea during nights. Other popular nightlife destinations of the city are White Beirut, Buddha, Whisky Mist Beirut, The Loft, and the BO18.

Must See

Old town, temples, theatres, museums, and palaces are major attractions for a tourist in Beirut. The best part is to visit the famous mosque Mohammad Al Amin which is just situated beside the beautiful Saint George Cathedral, right in the heart of Beirut. This is a  prominent feature of the Beirut city center that is still being rebuilt from the civil war. Gemmayzeh Street is the most talked about street with a wonderful atmosphere of all kinds of restaurants, bars, and shops. Pigeon Rock is an amazing place to stop by and one must see it during the sunset, a very romantic tourist attraction with a nice walk along the coastal line. One can take a boat and see the rocks closer and enjoy the scenic view. The city center is an ideal place to spend time in addition to experiencing branded shops. For entertainment, one can also enjoy watching movies at the cinema halls which also include a 4D cinema. People who have an interest in history can visit the Roman baths, and the well preserved Roman ruins of Beirut. The winery tour in Baalbek is another beautiful and refreshing spot to undertake.

Experiences

Music festivals happen mostly throughout the year, so one who is fond of concerts and festivals must book their tickets accordingly. Being a city of historical attraction, lots of antique art, jewelry, and other unique things are a must buy for people with such interests. For shopaholics, Hamra is the best place to visit. Summers are the best time to visit for beach lovers. Lots of activities, events, and parties happen during that time of the year. The most important thing is to taste Lebanese cuisine right from starters to desserts. Wine tasting in Baalbek is the perfect way to end a day trip. Teleferik is another amazing experience to do in the city to get a breathtaking view.
