About Vilnius

Once nicknamed the Jerusalem of the North, the city of Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania. The city exudes an old world charm. The pebble-lined streets of the city have wonderful and quaint looking buildings standing on either side. To every traveller's delight, these buildings house beautiful cafes, colourful boutiques, and quaint guesthouses. Vilnius has various monuments and churches that are a testament to its Catholic and Orthodox roots. The green cover of the city is so lush that it is said to cover over 40% of the whole of the city.  Reminders of loss are everywhere: museums dedicated to the Holocaust, former ghettos, preserved KGB torture chambers, and cemeteries filled with the war dead. Though a capital city, Vilnius feels much like an overgrown village. This is no Eastern European antique; artists, punks, and a self-declared micro-nation keep Vilnius cutting-edge.

Do(s):

  • Remember to punch your ticket when you are on a bus or trolleybus every time. This is due to the fact that sometimes the controllers are not always amenable.
  • Leave tips when in the city. It is considered polite to leave 10% of the bill as a tip when you receive good service.
  • Be punctual for your appointments when you are in the city as Lithuanians tend to value each other’s time a lot.

Don’t(s):

  • Do not consume alcohol in parks, squares, and other public places – it is prohibited by law.
  • Do not litter out of the car windows or in public places, you might get fined!
  • Do not kiss a person when greeting them if you do not know them well; it is more common to shake hands in Lithuania. Usually, only relatives or close friends kiss when meeting.
  • Do not get into a waiting taxi; if you call it by phone, it will take you to your destination at a lower rate

Night Life

It might not seem as such, but Vilnius truly does have an extremely lively nightlife! From some amazing music and cocktails to meeting new people, the night scenes of Vilnius might just be the best in Lithuania and probably in the entire Baltic states. Vilnius proudly boasts of some brilliant electronic music to pop gigs and also plays host to a number of gay clubs. There is literally something for everyone here and no one leaves disappointed or empty handed!  Have a go at clubs and pubs like Loftus, the biggest nightclubs in Vilnius, Opium, where electronic music becomes an addiction, Tamsta Club where they host some of the best live bands or the Bix, where rock music fans can go to enjoy the aura of it all! If you are in Vilnius, and you decide to overlook the nightlife of the city, then it truly would be a pity for sure.
