About Matka Canyon

A little away from the city lies this jewel in the crown, a feast to the eyes, peaceful to the mind and adventurous to the core. Matka canyon is situated 50 km away from the city center of Skopje. Matka canyon has an artificial lake, several caves, vertical pits, flora and fauna, medieval monasteries and natural beauty. The Verlo cave falls under one of the top 77 natural sites in the world. It can be accessed by a boat or a kayak only. The canyon is home to various kinds of butterflies, bats, and snakes. There are facilities for swimming, boating, kayaking, rock climbing or simply trekking in the mountain trail. The old churches and monasteries in the canyon, dating back to the 14th Century are worth a visit. St. Andrews Church is located in the gorge of river Treska whereas St. Nicholas monastery is located at the top of a cliff. All of them have different stories to tell. Ten caves are located in the canyon and the longest one is 176 meters long. There are two vertical pits having a depth of more than 35 meters. The lake Matka is the oldest artificial lake in the country. It has facilities for water sports. There are restaurants and cafes to take care of the food requirement of tourists. The place is full of tourists and locals on holidays, therefore on these particular days, it is advisable to reach the place early to enjoy the serenity to the fullest.

How to reach

Walking is not advisable since it is 16 km away from the city center.

By taxi one can reach here - Journey time is 30 minutes and the charges will be around 550 MKD.

By bus: Board the local bus no. 60 from Skopje Central Bus Terminal. The journey time is 50 minutes. Purchase a ticket - better to take a pre-filled card for 150 MKD. It is sufficient for a round trip journey. Buses are available every 90 - 100 minutes starting from 7:00 a.m.

Tips

  • Wearing a pair of comfortable shoes is a must because one has to walk a lot.
  • Carry a bottle of water.
  • It is an ideal place for a family picnic.
  • The trash boxes are not emptied by the authorities regularly.
  • On holidays plan an early visit as heavy traffic congests the approaching road to this place.
  • If planning to come by local buses on holidays, start before 9:00 a.m. and reach the city bus terminal 15 minutes before the departure of the bus to get a seat.
  • Buses are mostly full.
  • In case of heavy traffic, the local bus offloads the passengers much before the Canyon Matka near Glumovo village. Similarly, one will have to walk to Gulmovo village to catch a bus again.
  • Do not forget your camera.
  • Photography in St. Andrews Church is not permitted.
