About Millennium Cross

Every country has a unique monumental landmark depicting its historical, cultural and religious traditions and its ancient heritage. The Wall of China, Taj Mahal, and Statue of liberty are a few such examples. Skopje, too, has its monumental wonder in the form of the Millenium Cross. The Millenium Cross is a 66 m tall cross based on a grid design similar to the Eiffel tower. It has been constructed on top of Mount Vodno (1066 m AMSL), 15 km away from the city of Skopje. To signify the spread of Christianity over 2000 years in Macedonia, the then prime minister, Ljubco Georgievski, and the Macedonian Orthodox Church initiated the construction of this monument in 2002. It was completed in 2009. The city looks wonderful from this tourist spot. The Millennium Cross is reached by a ropeway from Sredno Vodno, halfway up the mountain. Since the ropeway is operational during a particular time period, a trip to this place has to be planned accordingly. During night time it is well lit and is visible from the city below.

  • A souvenir shop has been opened next to the cross.
  • Carry a bottle of water.
  • Wear proper shoes, there are loose rubbles at the site.
  • There is no toilet at the location of the Millennium Cross.
  • The area is not very clean because of the trash thrown by the tourists.
