About City Gate

The Renzo Piano-designed City Gate mimics the dimensions of the initial 1633 entrance, rather than the 1960s gate that it restored. It merges in the existing landscape and gives the feeling of crossing a real bridge, providing views of the canal and fortifications. The design is trimmed down and stark, and the gate is outlined by a pair of metal blades intended to look like knights' sabers.

Inside the entrance, a pair of broad, sloping flights of steps link the bastions of St. James’ Cavalier and St. John’s Cavalier to the lower-level Republic St. Looking back at the Republic St, you'll notice the City Gate forming a distinct 'V' shape, which stands for Valletta.
