About Jardin Exotique

A botanical garden with exclusivity and charm, and collection of flora fauna to drool over is Jardin Exotique in Monaco. The place opened for tourists in 1933 and is a must-see when in Monaco city. This garden has a vast collection of succulents and cacti. The garden comprises of variant plant species right from small Echinocereus to 10m-tall African candelabras. There is a cave at the base of this garden built inside a  limestone with natural formations. This particular stalactite- and a stalagmite-laced cave is the only one in Europe where the temperature rises as you descend. This cave is informative and exciting to visit, although it's on a steep hillside the paths are well graded, and there are plenty of stopping places from which to admire the spectacular views over Monaco. There are some information boards explaining aloes, euphorbias, cactus, etc. but they're mostly in French. Many plants have name tags so you can photograph them and cherish their existence later on. Since the garden is located on a hill, one can have a fantastic view of the seafront. If you love gardens and nature, this place surprises you with a wide variety of unusual plants. Generally, these plants are ones that cannot be grown anywhere just like that. Take a lot of pictures as some species like Aloe Vera growing flowers, and cacti growing in semicircles can be seen later in those pictures only.

Must See

At the base of the garden, there is a cave depicting the early life of man.

How to reach

It's about 2.4 km. Take Bus 79 to stop Savorani. It's a 10-minute walk from there. The fare is 2 Euros.

Tips

  • The Garden is on a hill slope; you can get a lovely view of the city from there. Plan your trip by taking time for this.
  • It takes 300 steps climbing up and down to reach the caves. So be prepared for an extensive cardio session.
  • You can get combo tickets for the aquarium as well, and you can save a few Euros here.
  • Follow the small walking paths in the steep hillside; this is usually not very comfortable for people who are afraid of heights.
  • Timings vary as per season, do follow them while planning.
  • Wear comfortable shoes since you need to walk a lot.
  • Carry drinking water as it is not available.
