About Prince's Palace of Monaco

A fortress constructed by the Genovese in 1215, is the Prince’s Palace. It consists of seven centuries of unremitting sovereignty. Going around the palace is equal to journeying through the rich history of Monaco. In 1297, the Grimaldi family who used it as their seat of power captured it and the legacy continues to date. Over the years the palace has been through several restorations. The modern renovations incorporate a variety of styles from different eras. New wings and towers were also added in times of prosperity.

Inside the palace, you can see the large collections of opulence and history with precious artwork adorning the walls. The courtyard has an impressive double staircase that leads to the State Apartments, where magnificent murals from the 16th Century gild the Mazarin Salon, the York Room, and the imposing Throne Room. Despite being a tourist attraction, the palace is still the Prince’s headquarters and home. Sentries guard the place, and a lot of pomp and show accompanies the guard change ceremony every day.

The audio guided tour lasts for about 45 minutes to 60 minutes; a bonus is a recorded greeting by Prince Albert II which gives a homely touch. It’s a historical palace that doubles as a home, with exquisite art and architecture; sort of like Buckingham Palace.
