About Orkhon Valley

Located at the foothills of the Khangai Range in Central Mongolia, Orkhon Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is known for its nomadic pastoral traditions which are reported to be as old as two millennia. Sprawling along the banks of River Orkhon, the Valley was regarded as the throne of the imperial power of the prairies for several centuries. Expanding across almost 122 hectares of pristine landscape, the basin houses numerous historical ruins, some of which belong to the 6th and 7th centuries. A few popular monuments in the vicinity include the 8th-century memorials of Bilge Khan and Kul Tigin from the nomadic Göktürk Empire, 8th-century ruins of Ordu-Baliq which was the then capital of Uyghur Empire, and ruins of the then Mongol capital of Karakorum founded by Genghis Khan.

Often regarded as the cradle of the nomadic pastoral steppes, Orkhon Valley has given residence to several nomadic tribes over the last few centuries. Some evidence indicates that they may have been in existence from the past 60,000 years. Today, the valley offers explorers a chance to immerse themselves in the natural as well as the historical panorama that the place offers. Living with a nomadic family, spending a few days at a traditional ger, and discovering this nomadic part of Mongolia is an unforgettable experience that you must reward yourself with.
