About National Museum of Mongolia

Mongolia's beautiful National Museum displays history from the Neolithic period right to the current day. The museum is Ulaanbataar's only real blockbuster sight, giving a unique overview of Mongolian culture, extending from stone-age petroglyphs and elegant gold embellishment to full range of old ritual costume. The costumes remind one of Star Wars. The first level has some impressive spreads on Stone Age sites in Mongolia, rock modelings of reindeer and other animals and funeral sites from Hun and Uighur ages. Look for a golden tiara, found in 2001 by scientists investigating near the Kul-Teginii Monument in Övörkhangai.

The second floor displays an exceptional collection of costumes, jewelry, and hats, displaying the culture of Mongolia's ethnic groups. Take a look at some of the detailed silverwork of the Dariganga minority or the fantastic headgear worn by Khalkh Mongols. Some of the outfits contain a whopping 20kg to 25kg of silver embellishment. The third floor is a must-see for followers of the Mongol crowd. The collection comprises real examples of 12th-Century Mongol armor and letter between Pope Innocent IV and Guyuk Khaan. Signed in Latin and Persian and dating back to the 13 November 1246, it bears the stamp of Khan. The museum also contains a demonstration of old Mongolian culture among other things, an equipped ger, traditional herding, and household implements. The main hall comprises a rousing, self-congratulatory exhibition of Mongolia's modern history and the 1990 constitutional revolution, with no naming of the breadlines of the early 1990s or other difficulties of the transformation from communism to democracy.
