About Dar Jamai Museum

Dar Jamai Museum is one of the most famous historical sites in Meknes. Located in the old Medina area, this remarkable monument was built in 1882 by Mohammed Ben Al-Arabi L’jamaai. He was the first minister of Hassan I. The site was first home to the Jamai family. Later, in the year 1912, it became a major military hospital. Considering the significance of the building, it was decided to transform the edifice into a magnificent historical site, and it got its name as Dar Jamai Museum. Since 1920, it is a famous museum that exhibits a beautiful collection of craft and masterpieces. The historical building still spreads the vibes of luxury and is a symbol of wealth and prosperity that was enjoyed by the Jamai family. The furnishing and valuable displays include traditional ceramics, cedar-wood craft, textiles, and jewelry.

The entrance of the museum is through the luxurious garden that has been beautifully landscaped in the Arabic style featuring fruit trees and beautiful cypresses. Even today the building portrays much of its wealthy beginnings. Besides the charming gardens, the museum also contains various historical items, incredible fountains, and stunning designs and artwork. The interior deserves appreciation which includes elegant painted windows, finely detailed tiles, sculptured plasterwork, and painted wood. The local talent and skills of the craftsmen lie in the soul and heart of this museum with some breathtaking colorful pieces of art that are displayed around. Several magnificent pieces of art are so creatively designed that they appear very lively. The building attracts thousands of visitors each year.

One can fly to Fes Saiss International Airport to visit Dar Jamai Museum in Meknes. One can get a taxi or bus from here to reach the destination. By Taxi: A taxi ride from the Meknès city centre towards the museum will take 4 minutes and cost 12.35 approximately for covering a distance of 2.6 kilometres
