About Church of Saint Andrew

The St. Andrew’s Church was built in 1894 by Hassan I of Morocco as a small Anglican Church in Tangier. After that, it was consecrated in 1905 with an objective to increase the worshippers of the Church. The Church is a mixture of English and Moroccan styles, and the Lord’s Prayer is engraved in Arabic, and quotes from the Quran appear across the Moorish-style walls. It is a quiet place comprising of documented history. The Church welcomes all faiths of prophets and books. It is a rare sight in Morocco to witness a historic sanctuary in the middle of the bustling city.

The lush green gardens surrounding the Church accords a peaceful and calming moment for the mind. Special services are performed on every Sunday for the well beings of their worshippers and other fellow beings. A cemetery surrounds the church that is worth lingering in. The graveyard holds the graves of Commonwealth soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II in North Africa. And with the likes of Moroccan explorer Walter Harris and Emily Keene, who bought the cholera vaccine to morocco.
The caretaker of the Church is always on-site and would offer a tour whenever you want. The chapel is a distinctive blend of Angelic and Islamic elements. It gives a peaceful experience for the mind in the Church surrounded by the tender garden. The place is filled with the history of Tangier and the Church. It also has a bell tower resembling a minaret. The friendly and polite staff enhance the mind and also give us the reason to return back. The peculiar architecture, welcoming people, and tranquil surroundings leave a lasting impression in the mind of the visitors.

How to reach

By air: The Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport is the closest to St. Andrew’s Church.

By Taxi: Take a taxi or bus to reach the Church, which is only 12 kilometres in distance(Taxi Fare would be in the region of MAD180).
By car: Rental cars or private cars can be hired to drive to the place(Price would go MAD200 or above, depending upon the operator).

  • Be careful and polite to the locals and other visitors
  • Sign up for an experienced guide for smooth local tour
  • The best time of visit is from April to June and from September to October
  • Do not cause any harm to the Church or its surroundings

  • Wear appropriate clothes to respect the culture of the people
  • Do not use offensive languages or expressions inside the premises
  •  Ensure the safety of yourself and others travelling with you but not
  • indulging in anything dubious
