The Grottes Hercules is a famous cave located at Cape Spartel, the most north-western point of mainland Africa. It is also referred to as Caves of Hercules. This cave lies 14 kilometers west of Tangier. The history of these caves dates back to 6000 BC Neolithic habitation. In 1952, the caves were discovered as a National Heritage site. The site offers a great view and glimpses of the interesting ancient history of the city. It marks the premier tourist attraction of Tangier. The caves include both natural and man-made parts out of which only some are accessible to the public. This is a fascinating cave steeped in myths and legends. According to a myth, Hercules, the God of Roman mythology, rested at this point on his way to steal three golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides. It is said that these caves are 15-mile long which connects Morocco and Spain with a tunnel.
This site has two endings. One of its endings faces the sea and another is towards land. The side that faces the sea resembles the shape of Africa and is popularly known as the ‘Map of Africa’. It is believed that it was created by Phoenicians in a way that it looks like a map of Africa from the sea. The walls of the caves have several markings made by Phoenicians which appear to be the map of the local area. Some of the other markings made by Phoenicians are in the shape of the eyes. The man-made part of the cave was commonly used by local Berbers. They used to make milestones by cutting the stone wheels from the walls.
