About Vondelpark

The designs for the public park was prepared by Architect Jan David Zocher in 1864 and first part was completed in 1865. In 1867, a statue of writer and playwright Joost van den Vondel was placed in the park and from that time the park was officially registered as Vondelpark. The park eventually extended to about 120 Acres and completed in 1877.  Presently the park is administered by Municipality of Amsterdam. The park has around 10 million visitors.

  • You can enjoy the nature as the park extends around 120 Acres During the summer months there are free concerts in the Open Air Theater.
  • You can go cycling around the outer paved paths which is 3.2 km long.
  • There are many children's playgrounds spread throughout the park.
  • In the summer there is also a children's pool. There are many terraces where you can drink and eat.
  • The Blue Teahouse, sleek architecture from the 1930s If you are a couple, you can hang locks on the Iepenbrug, the bridge between the Blauwe Theehuis and the Vondelstraat.
  • The Bandstand, The Picasso statue for children, there are toys in playground, a castle for adventurers, The Children's Bath, The Climb Tree etc.

How to reach

Southwest of the city center, a few hundred meters from Leidseplein. If you are using public transport, take tram 1 or 2. Best way to see the park is by bike, which may be rented nearby.

Tips

  • Read the program on the posters at the entrances of the park.
  • You can play sports like skating, football or you can jog around in circles.
  • You can see the Vondel park on Google Streetmaps which has included the complete Vondelpark in photos.
  • There are small ducks and swans which you can feed, so please do not forget to carry bread or fruits for them.
  • If you are interested in holding a tour through the Vondelpark with a group, there is a guided tour by park experts which lasts from one hr. to half a day.
  • You can choose a specific theme like nature, history, architecture. You can also visit the normally closed area in the park. The fees start from 30 Euros.
  • It is not recommended to go by car. Parking around the park must be with a parking card, and they are expensive.
  • There is a parking garage next to the Marriott Hotel, street parking is best in the Emmalaan.
