About Plaza Pública URUGUAYA

The Plaza Publica, Uruguay is situated across the street from the Railway Station in old downtown, at the beginning of Palma Street. During the colonial time, the Saint Francis Convent was located here, therefore, the original name of the place was Plaza San Francisco. The Uruguayans returned to Paraguay the trophies confiscated during the Triple Alliance War. In gratitude to the Uruguayan people, the square was renamed as "Plaza Uruguaya." This beautiful plaza is full of trees. It is a great spot to explore Paraguayan history. Sit on one of the benches and watch the world go by and appreciate the beautiful landscaping. Also, one can enjoy traditional foods, sip cold green tea (el terere), and talk to vendors, provided one speaks Spanish. The unique thing about this plaza is the bookstores located in the park. Tourists find them quite fascinating. There are some awesome copies of sculptures by Canova and others. The larger than a life-size bronze statue of José Gervasio Artigas, the father of Uruguay's Independence, is outstanding.  It is fascinating to watch the friendly chess players and anyone is welcome to challenge the locals for a game. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are days devoted to cultural shows. There are a few tents where shelterless people stay. Those places should be avoided.
