About Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, also known as Cerro Colorado Vinicunca, is a mountain range in the Andes of Peru located at an altitude of 5,200 meters above sea level. Considered the fourth most massive mountain in Peru, “Vinicunca” is a seven-color mountain deriving its hue from sediments, the atmosphere, and a diversity of minerals formed millions of years ago. Located deep in the mountain range, it is unique because of its altitude and isolation as well as its location close to the ocean.  All the seven rainbow shades here are uncommonly colored into lavender, vibrant turquoise, terra cotta, and more such.

One of the extremely populated tourist attractions in Peru, the Cerro Colorado Vinicunca has become famous a lot lately due to the magnificent photographs that visitors take and post on social media platforms. Tickets to the mountain are only available at the control booth in the Pampachiri community that lies on the foot of the Ausangate snowy mountain. Cerro Colorado is six kilometers from the control booth from where people either hike or hire horses to reach the summit.

Along with offering one of the most incredible natural landscapes in the world, you can witness astonishing fauna such as alpacas, vizcachas, condors, llamas, vicunas, and a few more. At times even the most adept travelers would find it hard to locate the correct route; however, the growing tourist population has littered the place now, which would lead you to the paths towards the summit. The rainbow view of Vinicunca is best visible in the dry season from April to October when skies are more apparent, rains are less frequent, and mountain shows it true colors. The rest of the year being snowy and foggy the view can be very disappointing.
