The parade ground is still the place where many of the folkloric festivities of Cusco are celebrated, such as the Santuranticuy, Holy Week, Corpus Christi, and other more modern ones, such as the national holidays, parties of Cusco, New Year, etc. It also holds free concerts, some parades of institutions and allegories, as well as political rallies.
We still do not know for sure the true Quechua name with what was called the current Plaza de armas of Cusco, in the time of the Incas. Authors such as Maria Rostworowski affirm that it was called Aucaypata, place of the warrior; other authors such as Víctor Angles say that it was Huacaypata, the place of tears, and others such as the American George Squier (in 1863) claim that it was called Huacapata, a sacred place.
Advise to prepare in advance as to how to adjust to the altitude.
The parade ground is excellent to see the local people and take pictures to the cathedral
Do not miss one of the tombs Tupac Amaru is buried in. Pay attention to this detail because it is under some trees and maybe you can not find it.
