About Choquequirao Archaeological Park

An Incan site in Southern Peru, the Parque Arqueologico Choquequirao, is also called the “Sister of Machu Pichu” because of the similar geography. Heightened at an altitude of 3,085 meters above the sea level, it was a site of fundamental religious belief and political service from the ancient Inca times. This archaeological site constitutes buildings and terraces carved in by stone and full of riches from the ancient world.

Choquequirao Archaeological Park is spread around an area of 1,800 hectares, of which only 30 to 40% is excavated as of yet. Articulated like Machu Pichu, the park consists of haucas, elite residences, fountain and bath systems, and temples of the Inca urban design. Choquequirao is predicted to be a fortress and a ritualistic center that serves a very strategic purpose due to its discreet location on a high and far-flung mountain.

Built around the 15th century or perhaps in the year 1445, this site was recovered in 1909 before the re-discovery of Machu Pichu. It was the last Inca refuge before the occurrence of the Spanish invasion. Trekking towards this naturally hidden archaeological park takes around three days that includes various camp sittings during the trek. The first night camp lies nearby a place known as Rosalina beach followed by a next day tour that requires crossing a river for starting the ascent to Choquequira while the third day comprises reaching the village of Marampata, also known as the gateway to Choquequirao.

On arriving at the Inca city of Choquequirao, one can witness a large town surrounded by three hills which has 12 sectors from which some still has to be excavated.
