About Oasis of Huacachina

The only natural desert oasis in South America, the “Oasis of Huacachina” is home to extraordinary experiences and adventures. A lot of stories lie behind the existence of this beautiful oasis. As it is said by many, one day, a local Inca princess who used to bathe in the hidden lagoon every day, spotted a local hunter staring at her. The princess quickly put on her cloaked robe and ran away, but she accidentally dropped her mirror in the pool. The mirror is said to have created the lagoon and magnificent and largest sand dunes of South America. Many more similar stories revolve around the local beliefs that the princess is still alive and wandering somewhere in the Huacachina. Though whatever the stories may be, all of them conclude that the princess is still upset at what happened.

As the locals’ claim, oasis and sand dunes are known to be both blessed and cursed equally. Covering yourself fully in the sand of Huacachina is said to be the cure of various illnesses including asthma, bronchitis infection, and several skin allergies. Apart from this, the oasis is open to paddle boating (rented) as well as pleasant views of the surrounding.

Oasis of Huacachina is home to a few hundred people but it welcomes thousands of tourists every year. It is kind of a resort that belongs to the local families from the nearby city of Ica. One can visit here for a day trip or 2 to 3 days' stayover in the locality. The dunes in Huacachina offer various adventures like dune buggies, sandboarding, bodyboarding, buggy rollercoaster which are marked as best in South America.
