Dating back 5000 years ago, the Complejo Arqueologico la Huaca el Brujo was founded by the Moche culture and also served as home to ancient civilizations like the Waris and Incas. This archaeological site is a display of artwork of Peru's first pre-Hispanic female rulers and other architectural achievements. Insides of the complex constitute of three pyramid temples known as huacas. El Brujo represents a cluster of dozens of buildings and spaces of different times and functions that are not yet adequately understood. Renowned for being the only archaeological site on the North Coast, and probably in Peru, this pre-ceramic site holds material evidence of human occupations corresponding to all Peruvian history periods.
Besides assembling the archaeological scraps, the complex proposes to transmit the stories that each piece contains, thus providing new tools to understand how life could have been for the fabulous cultures that occupied the north coast of Peru. It recreates a long sequence of cultural developments at El Brujo. This small but vibrant museum is one of the best places to learn about Moches and Cao's Lady. The tomb mummy of a 21-year-old Queen, "The Lady of Cao," is found preserved with artifacts (her cotton print dress, jewelry, and gold crowns) is the best one could see and experience in the museum.
The sitting of this archeological complex is entirely isolated overlooking the Pacific ocean and covered with natural elements. The best preserved of the three pyramid temples feature multi-colored frescoes depicting martyred soldiers, warriors, and priests. The ceremonial patios still have some shades of their original color. The complex's oldest temple, built around 2,500 B.C, Huaca Prieta features relics that portray attacking figures and cuts on the temple walls known to be done by grave robbers and Spanish colonists.
