About Huaca del Sol y la Luna

Huaca del Sol y la Luna is an archaeological complex in the northeast of Peru, also considered as Morche Sanctuary. The temple of sun and moon represents Mochica culture and traditions, which was rigorously followed from the 1st Century to the 9th Century. Many theories say that The Huaca del Sol got built for politics and Huaca la Luna for religion. The archaeological work is less in Huaca del Sol when compared to Huaca la Luna due to lack of budget. One hundred forty million adobes were used to build Huaca del Sol by 250,000 men in just three days. The Moches solved the shortage of water in the most deserted region of Huaca del Sol y la Luna being great hydraulic engineers. The Moche Valley is considered as the capital of the city, hence also the reason the temple receives the most attention.

Human sacrifices were among the activities in Huaca de la Luna. During those times, fights were organized, and the person who loses the battle will be chosen as a sacrifice. The slaughtered heads were then presented to Aiapeac, who was adored for its protection to the Moches and equally feared for its anger and punishment. The Aiapeac was described to be a cut-throat god, owl eyes, and hair of sea waves or octopus. Their walls are colored from oxides of different minerals. There are five different levels in Huaca del Sol y la Luna. Whenever a new president arrived, he ordered the old temple to be sealed and a new one to be built above the ancient temple. After 28 years, in 2103, experts found 300 graves with valuable ceramics in this archaeological site.
