About St. Mary's Basilica

Magnificent art, beautiful architecture: A beautiful, fabulous church rebuilt in the Gothic style after brought to ruins during the Tartar raids in the 13th century. It is dominated by two towers of different heights. From the northern tower the hejnal mariacki - the city's famous bugle call - is played every hour on the hour. Witness the city's most enduring traditions, the tune ironically breaks off mid-melody in honour of the mythical trumpeter who was shot while belatedly warning the city of Mongol invaders. The church is full of wonderful wooden carvings and pictures. The colourful wall paintings harmonize beautifully with the medieval architecture and are an appropriate background for the high altar. The magnificent stained-glass windows illuminate the Chancel dating from the late 14th century; the blue star vaulting of the nave is breathtaking. Access the wooden stairs of St. Mary’s Basilica to be rewarded by the panoramic view of Krakow, collect a couple of Cracovian legends, or marvel at the largest wooden altarpiece in the world.
