About Peles Castle

Peles Castle finished construction in 1914. King Carol I of Romania was unhappy with all of the architectural plans proposed for his castle on the medieval route between Transylvania and Wallachia. He wanted something unseen in Western Europe. The result was a magnificent alpine castle that combined classic Europe style with Italian elegance and German aesthetics.

The romantic exterior includes a mesh of wood “fachwerk” and hand-painted murals, while the interior is heavily influenced by the Baroque. Heavy fabric tapestries and carved wood adorn the walls of the galleries and library. Each of the 170 rooms has a different theme according to its function with lavish furnishings in each: Oriental rugs, French porcelain, leather from Spain, and stained glass from Switzerland.

The journal of Queen Elisabeth, wife of King Carol I, has been referenced numerous times, “Italians were masons, Romanians were building terraces, the Gypsies were coolies. Albanians and Greeks worked in stone, Germans and Hungarians were carpenters. Turks were burning brick. Engineers were Polish and the stone carvers were Czech. The Frenchmen were drawing, the Englishmen were measuring, and so was then when you could see hundreds of national costumes and fourteen languages in which they spoke, sang, cursed and quarreled in all dialects and tones, a joyful mix of men, horses, cart oxen, and domestic buffaloes.”

Peles Castle is a masterpiece of what different cultures can create when working together.
