About National Museum

A state-of-the-art source to learn about the fascinating history of the Arabian Peninsula, the Riyadh National Museum is one of the finest, not only in the middle east but in the world. Situated in the King Abdul Aziz Historical Center in Riyadh, the place was established in 1999. 
The creation of the museum was a part of an old building restoration plan that is the ‘Murabba Development Plan’, whose goal was to renovate the area around the  Murabba palace on the occasion of the Centennial Celebrations in Saudi Arabia. Now, it is one of the most visited points of attraction in the whole country. If you are interested to know in detail about the land of the Arabian Nights, in one of the most expensive cities in the world, there is no better place than this. 
The two-storied museum building holds a massive collection of antiquities, scriptures, artifacts, and other objects with utmost important historical importance. In a gallery with more than twenty-eight thousand square feet area, it houses the exhibits in a detailed era-dependent 
Collection, from the dawn of the universe to the modern age. The emphasis on the history and culture of the Arabian Peninsula makes it more special. From rock painting, models, reconstructions of a Nabataean tomb from Madain Saleh to documentary films on 180-degree screens, the museum has it all. It also tells the tale of the Royal family, in the galleries with their belongings and fancy cars. 
If you want to know about the spread of Islamic religion in the Arab countries, this is undoubtedly the best place. The immersive experience with the exhibits and displays document all the social, economic, and cultural impacts and changes of the region. The museum also organizes a number of cultural, educational, and artistic programs and activities during the summer sessions to attract the guests, and offer the first-hand experience to show the social and educational evolution of the country and its culture.

How to reach

From Riyadh (city center), The National Museum can be reached via the following ways:

You could take a local taxi to cover the 6.2-kilometer distance in just 6 minutes. The estimated fare is 30 to 40 SR (about $9 to $11 USD)
If you want to save some money, opt for an Uber. For the same 6.2-kilometer distance, the estimated fare is just 12 to 16 SR (about $3 to $5 USD)
If the weather is nice and you want to experience the local culture closely, you can always opt for a walk. The shortest route is around 5.6 km which will take around 1 hour 5 minutes to reach. 

Tips

  • Before visiting, try the virtual tour of the museum and download a copy of the Riyadh National Museum guide, so that you have some information beforehand of the wonder you are going to see
  • Do wear comfortable shoes as you have to walk a lot to cover a major portion of the galleries and exhibits
  • You may opt to visit around late evening or early morning when the rush is low
  • Look for the signs and displays in the English language if you do not know Arabic. It has a detailed English version on the exhibits also 
  • There are a number of snacks and coffee joints on the campus, so you can always go for a quick refreshment and continue the exploration of the halls
  • The members of the staff are cordial and helpful, so if you can not understand something, do not hesitate and request for help
  • Get your entrance ticket from the front desk before entering this place, you do not need to book in advance
  • Bags or drinks are not allowed inside. Deposit if you have a large bag or luggage, and walk inside for a calm and enlightening experience 
  • If you can afford it, opt for a guided tour, to understand and get an inside view of the culture and tradition of the Arabian peninsula
  • Do not miss the Hall of Hajj and Two Holy Mosques, those of Mecca and Medina, especially if you are a non-Muslim and are not allowed to enter those two actual places
  • With the same ticket, you can also go and visit the Murabba historical palace
  • After visiting the museum, do check out the gardens outside and the park at the back
